Back To The Future: The MusicalAdelphi Theatre,                               Until July 3, 2022, 2hrs 40minsRating: When considering a musical version of the 1985 movie Back To The Future, one problem surely screeched into view: how to put a time-travelling DeLorean on stage?  
  
Happily, this production practically hits light speed when it comes to whizzy stagecraft. An assault on the senses, its flashing lights, multiple screens, slick projections and an improbably floating car all provide serious thrills.  
Buckle up: it's quite a ride.What it fails to do is make the case for being a musical. Created by the film's writers, Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis, the book is almost identical to the movie script, leaving the songs by Alan Silvestri and сериалы 2021 онлайн Glen Ballard to inject new life. Performances can come dangerously close to impersonation - no bad thing in the case of Olly Dobson (above, with Roger Bart), perfectly cast as Marty McFly, with just the right charismaThey provide fun pastiches of 1980s and 1950s pop songs with droll lyrics (Marty's besotted mum crooning Pretty Baby at him traffics in particularly icky irony).  
  
But the songs are forgettable and rarely offer insight into the characters.But as a vehicle for spectacle, they deliver. Any chance for glitz, splashy dance routines or expensive-looking set changes is embraced in this OTT production. That this sometimes sits oddly with the story is amusingly acknowledged: Doc Brown looks baffled to find a chorus line in his workshop.Performances can come dangerously close to impersonation - no bad thing in the case of Olly Dobson, perfectly cast as Marty McFly, with just the right charisma.Thankfully, Broadway star Roger Bart - back in the driving seat as Doc after contracting Covid - doesn't ape Christopher Lloyd but brings his own goofy style (and wiggling hips).Whatever its flaws, this musical provides a whacking great hit of spectacle, entertainment and nostalgia - and should leave audiences feeling suitably transported.
